The Veterinary Medical Center of CNY is always happy to interact with veterinarians and veterinary specialists interested in joining our team. Openings currently exist in both existing services and additional specialties.

We are a well-established, thriving 24-hr emergency and specialty referral practice located in the Syracuse area of upstate New York. We offer a collaborative work environment with board certified specialists in Surgery, Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Radiology. We also offer certified professionals in Physical Rehabilitation and Pain Management. Specialization:

We boast the largest group of VTS LVTs in the Syracuse region, with specialization primarily in the area of Emergency and Critical Care (ECC). VTS LVTs receive an automatic pay increase upon successful completion of their specialization. We encourage each technician to consider gaining these credentials and are supportive of the process. Formal mentored programs are available in some specialties, and financial support is available for the credentialing process.

Formal Training and Development Program

Veterinary Medical Center of CNY offers a formal Training and Development Program led by our LVT Director of Development, Gayle Fuerst, LVT, RN. Gayle came to VMC originally in 2005 as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, after having worked in a busy ER/Specialty practice in Colorado. Gayle became the first VTS (ECC) in the Syracuse area shortly after joining VMC, and her mentorship and example directly assisted or inspired many other VMC techs to gain VTS certification. She served as VMC's LVT Supervisor for a number of years before completing her education as a Registered Nurse and transitioning to human medicine.

We are thrilled that Gayle has rejoined our field to assist us in preparing and mentoring our Licensed Veterinary Technicians for successful and rewarding careers in emergency and specialty veterinary medicine.

Jumping into emergency and specialty medicine can be a real challenge, but we’re ready to help you succeed! Our formalized training and mentoring program allows us to confidently add new grads and technicians with no prior emergency/specialty experience to our team.

Veterinary Assistant

Veterinary Assistants (VAs) at the Veterinary Medical Center of CNY perform a wide variety of duties in our emergency and specialty services, and most VA duties involve active, hands-on patient care. While each individual in the VA position receives the same basic VMC training, we respect the fact that individuals come to the VMC with unique experiences, education levels, skills, and talents. Keeping this in mind, our VAs are placed in positions where individual strengths can be utilized to best enhance the VMC and to best ensure a rewarding and successful professional experience for each individual. The VMC considers both individuals with prior veterinary experience or training and entry level applicants for VA positions.

Client Care Representatives

The Client Care Representatives (CCRs) at the Veterinary Medical Center of CNY are a highly professional, compassionate group who serve as the first point of contact for pet owners calling and entering our facility. Our CCRs are a well-respected, crucial part of the VMC team. They are consistently able to provide comfort and superb service to our anxious pet owners. Excellent communication skills are an essential for this position. A formal Career Advancement ladder is provided for this position, as well as a yearly continuing education stipend. CCRs are encouraged to find a career with the VMC. Our CCRs enjoy the challenges of the position as much as they enjoy the deeply rewarding opportunity to assist those in need.

Prior veterinary experience is not required for this position, but excellent communication skills are absolutely essential. Those individuals with a sincere desire to help pet owners during sometimes difficult circumstances will find a fulfilling career with the VMC.

Veterinary Externship Programs

Veterinary Externship

The Veterinary Medical Center of Central New York offers externship programs to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students at AVMA accredited institutions. Students may rotate through various services depending on their individual interests. Experiences through the CARE Pet Therapy center (encompassing acupuncture, physical rehabilitation, and pain management services) are also available. The length of each externship can be tailored to the individual student’s needs.

The VMC of CNY externship is meant to introduce students to a busy emergency and referral practice with a commitment to team based care and a high quality of medicine and patient care. Externs will have the ability to participate and observe as they work directly with an emergency clinician or specialist in the area of their choice. Externships are also an opportunity to explore the VMC of CNY's internship program, as externs are expected to join in didactic activities such as intern rounds and journal club.

Veterinary Technician Externship

The Veterinary Medical Center of CNY offers externship rotations to interested veterinary technology students. A wide variety of rotations are available to externs: Emergency, Oncology, Physical Rehabilitation, Acupuncture, and Surgery. Externships may involve observation only or may incorporate hands-on experience. Externs will work closely with team members to complete daily tasks.

The externship program offers an excellent opportunity for veterinary technology students who wish to observe a busy emergency/referral specialty practice. The program also offers the opportunity for those interested in pursuing employment at VMC of CNY to view the hospital first-hand and speak with our team.
