Massage

A massage for my pet?  You’re kidding me!

While it may sound like a luxury extravagance, a massage performed by a specially trained veterinary professional can have very serious therapeutic benefits for your pet!

For instance, massage therapy can
  • enhance a patient’s ability to recover from injury or illness
  • improve range of motion and comfort for pet’s with chronic injury or arthritis
  • increase circulation and nerve stimulation
  • release muscle tenderness and spasms
  • reduce pain

What patients can benefit from massage?
  • Elderly pets: Muscular cramps, stiffness, arthritis and some other common disorders associated with aging may be improved with regular massage.  Pet owners often notice an improved range of motion and overall comfort level.  Your senior pet may develop whole new spring in his step!
  • Pets recovering from injury or surgery: Healing can be promoted with the appropriate massage techniques
  • Sporting dogs:  Massage can help with pre- and post-event issues
  • Any pet can benefit from the increased circulation, relaxed nervous system, and overall wellness-promoting benefits of massage

Is massage safe?
When performed by a trained professional, veterinary massage is very safe.  If performed incorrectly, massage can cause some problems to worsen or can cause other injury.

Massage can be damaging when trauma, injury, infection, fever, inflammation, or any acute problem exists.  This is why it is important to consider the level of training and education a Veterinary Massage Practitioner has received.  Massage at VMC is performed by a Licensed Veterinary Technician with specialized training and certification in Small Animal Massage.  Additionally, all massage plans are individualized for the patient and approved by a veterinarian.
